HBO Picks Up The Rock’s ‘Ballers’ Pilot to Series

the-rock-2013-wwe-champion

Announced by both Deadline and The Rock himself, HBO has picked up Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg’s half-hour pilot, Ballers, to series.

Yes, The Rock is executive producing the series with his Pain & Gain co-star Wahlberg – with Wahlberg’s manager/frequent producing partner Steve Levinson, on whose original idea the project is based. Peter Berg (Battleship, and who directed The Rock in The Rundown) directed the pilot.

SOA’s Donal Logue Joins Gotham

Written by Levinson in his pilot-writing debut, Ballers “explores the lives of a group of former and current football players.”

Johnson himself stars as Spencer Strasmore, a retired athlete. The cast includes Omar Benson Miller as Charles, an affable former pro athlete who is searching for his next career; Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington as Ricky, a highly competitive and highly spiritual pro athlete; Rob Corddry as Joe, a financial advisor who tries really hard to fit in; Troy Garity as Jason, a top-tier sports agent; Donovan Carter as Vernon, a deeply family-oriented pro athlete; Jazmyn Simon as Julie, wife of an ex-pro athlete; Taylor Cole as Michaels, an ESPN sideline reporter who is romantically involved with Spencer; and LeToya Luckett as Tina, widow to one of Spencer’s closest friends.’

The Rock’s *All-New* TNT Reality Series!

rocky3_original

Instead of opting for a second season of The Rock‘s reality competition series, The Hero, TNT has greenlit 8 episodes of an all-new reality series starring The Rock – tentatively titled Wake Up Call.

Set to air in 2014, Wake Up Call, starring and executive-produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, will feature The Rock tackling the worst of the worst and make them into the best of the best with his own personal brand of high-octane motivation. From dysfunctional homes and dead-beat dads to sports teams that don’t gel and businesses struggling to survive, The Rock is going to descend into the chaos of everyday problems to pull good people up by the bootstraps, reminding them what hard work, passion and true discipline can accomplish.

Each segment on Wake Up Call will be a journey for The Rock and his team, as well as for those who will struggle to live up to The Rock’s herculean ideals. With 4 a.m. wake-up calls, emotional reunions and near-impossible goals, everyone who comes in contact with The Rock’s electric sense of personal motivation will grow from it, finding inner strength and heart.

“We had a wonderful time working with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on The Hero, in which he challenged and mentored a group of everyday heroes,” said David Eilenberg, senior vice president, unscripted development for TNT and TBS. “Wake Up Call evolved from our experience on The Hero and is its natural successor, bringing the human spirit of that show home to take on everyday challenges. In this new series, Dwayne will bring his mission of empowerment and change right to people’s front doors.”

“We are super excited to expand our relationship with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and our amazing partners at Turner with Wake Up Call, a perfect programming format that comes out of the best elements of The Hero in a closed-ended transformation show,” said executive producer Ben Silverman.

On top of this, rumors persist that the WWE is trying to get The Rock back in a few months in order to run a Rock vs. Brock Lesnar program for WrestleMania. It was during the “Road to WrestleMania” story last year when The Rock, as WWE Champions, went down to Panama for a few weeks to shoot The Hero. As of this time, there’s been no word on whether Rock is interested in returning for one more WWE run

The Rock in Talks for WWE’s Movie Version of “The Fall Guy”

rocky3_original

In case you were wondering if The Rock and the WWE might soon share a mutual film to cross-promote the hell out of, THR is reporting that Dwayne Johnson is in talks to star in a movie adaptation of the old 80s ABC series The Fall Guy.

The Fall Guy ran from ’81 to ’86 and starred Lee Majors as Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who would get into his own action-oriented adventures once the cameras stopped rolling. McG (Terminator Salvation, This Means War) is in negotiations to direct the project, which WWE Studios would co-finance.

To this day though, the most memorable part of The Fall Guy was the theme song – which I’m sure The Rock will want to sing himself this time around…

The Rock on Possibly Returning to Wrestling

rocky3_original

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, The Rock spoke about the chances of him returning to a WWE ring…

From the piece: “I’d like to leave it open. But if I’d never wrestle again, I’d be very content with that. Winning or losing never really mattered to me. The whole idea was to put on a great match. Got injured in that match. Still was able to walk out on my own, which I was more happy about. I don’t know. We’ll see.”
